DISCLAIMER: You may notice there are a lot of over-used keywords or phrases as well as English that seems a little off. This is because these articles are used to feed our AI Robot (Ira) and she needs the data to be structured in a certain way.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure to install the sensor with the sensor holes (found on the bottom part of the sensor) facing down. Failure to do so will result in inaccurate readings.

This is the digital setup instructions for the Red Series Smart 4-1 Sensor on the SmartThings platform.

4 in 1 Sensor (Z-Wave) – Inovelli

Navigating the Instructions

Please click on any of the sections in the Table of Contents to get started. We recommend working your way down as it follows an intentional flow that is user friendly and hub/gateway specific.

Quick Setup Instructions

Follow these if you have already installed the smart sensor before and are just looking for some quick pairing instructions. If this is your first time installing the smart bulb, please skip this section and work your way through the various sections below starting with the Prerequisites.

This section assumes the following:

  1. You’ve installed the Edge Driver

Let’s begin:

  1. Open up your SmartThings App to the, “Devices” tab and click on the + at the top right

  2. Click, “Add Device”

  3. Then under, “Scan for nearby devices” click, “Scan”

  4. Press the Sensor Button (B) on the back of the sensor one time

  5. The LED Indicator (A) on the front should blink red rapidly indicating it's in inclusion mode - it will turn solid red to indicate it was included successfully as shown in the Video Demonstration below

  6. SmartThings should then search for, find and let you know that a device was added

Video Demonstration

If you run into issues where your sensor is not including, you may have to try an exclusion process. To exclude your sensor, start the exclusion process on your hub and then press the sensor button (B) one (1) time. The LED Indicator will flash red one time and if successful the LED Indicator will rapidly blink red and then turn off. Please see the Video Demonstration for a visual. If you continue to have issues after an exclusion, you may have to move the sensor closer to the hub.

Prerequisites

The only prerequisite to pairing this switch is the following:

  • Installation of the Device Edge Driver

While this sensor will also pair without it, for full functionality, you’ll want to install the Edge Driver.

Device Edge Driver Installation

To install the Edge Driver, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on the following link Samsung Edge Driver Access and sign into your Samsung account (you may have 2-Factor Authentication on – if so, please follow the directions Samsung gives you to attain a code)

  2. Next, click, “Enroll” by the hub your devices are paired to

  3. Next, click, “Available Drivers”

  4. Finally, click on the driver you’d like installed by clicking, “Install”
(NOTE: In this case, please install, “Inovelli 4-in-1 Sensor”)

Now when you pair your sensor, it should automatically pick up the Edge Driver. Feel free to move onto the next section of the Setup Instructions below.

Installing the Sensor

REMINDER: Regardless of how you install your sensor (permanent or temporary) please make sure to install the sensor with the sensor holes (found on the bottom part of the sensor) facing down. Failure to do so will result in inaccurate readings.

MICRO-USB: You may forgo the battery and use a micro-usb (not included). Please use a standard 12V adapter.

Permanent Installation

If you’d prefer a permanent solution, please use the included screws to mount to a wall (use drywall anchors (included) if mounting in drywall). Please note that the Base (E) should be unscrewed first to make it easier to drill the screws into the wall and ensure that the sensor holes (F) are pointed at the floor.

Temporary Installation

If you’d prefer a temporary solution, please use the included adhesive tape (to install, please clean the surface of the area you’re mounting to, put the adhesive on the Base (E) and then mount on the wall, holding down for 30 seconds) and ensure that the sensor holes (F) are pointed down at the floor.

Pairing Instructions

The below instructions assume you have installed the Edge Driver prior to pairing.

  1. Open your SmartThings App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Press the (+) button at the top right of the screen

  3. Click on, “Add Device”

  4. At the bottom of the screen click on, "Scan nearby"

  5. While your SmartThings hub is scanning, press the Sensor Button (B) on the back of the sensor one time. The LED Indicator (A) on the front should blink red rapidly indicating it's in inclusion mode - it will turn solid red to indicate it was included successfully as shown in the GIF below

  6. Click on, "Done"

Once your sensor is successfully paired, check to make sure you have basic functionality of it by walking in front of it. The LED Indicator should blink red indicating that the sensor detects motion.

Advanced Feature Setup

This sensor is packed with features and most of them come directly from this community.

Below we will provide a link to all the parameters and show you how to change them from within SmartThings and then we'll go into some of the advanced features and explain how to set them up in SmartThings.

Parameter Explanations

You will need to install an Edge Driver prior to accessing any of these features from within the app. Instructions can be found here: Edge Driver Installation

A parameter is a setting within the switch firmware that allows you to change how the sensor operates. For example, you want to change the motion reporting interval, the temperature threshold and much more -- all with a few clicks within the app.

To access your parameters, please follow the steps below:

  1. Open your SmartThings App and go to the, "Devices" tab

  2. Find your Red Series Smart 4-1 Sensor and click on it

  3. Click on the three dots at the top right and select, "Settings"

  4. From here, you can scroll down, locate and change the various parameters on the sensor

For a list of the most up-to-date parameters and the firmware version they are associated with, please visit the Red Series Smart 4-1 Sensor Parameter Page

Z-Wave Associations

Z-Wave Associations is when two or more Z-Wave products communicate directly with one another without the need to communicate with a hub. There are two main benefits of utilizing Z-Wave Associations: speed & local control.

From a speed standpoint, cutting out the middle-man (hub) can save precious milliseconds or even seconds depending on your cloud and/or processing power off your hub. Whereas from a local control standpoint, if your hub goes does down and cannot communicate, your products can still talk to each other.

To setup Z-Wave Associations with your SmartThings Hub, please see this article: Setting Up Z-Wave Associations • SmartThings
